Abstract

Scholars have examined the Niger Delta region from many angles, including from those of politics, history, ethnography, military science, and diplomacy) Experts have thus created a body of mixed knowledge that now guides academics as they struggle to further expand their understanding of the pee-colonial era and especially nineteenth-century events; and peoples in the Niger Delta. In this vein, the present chapter will identify and interpret, in their historical contexts) some key words, terms and concepts that have dominated the history and historiography of Niger Delta politics and society before the turn of the twentieth-century. This study argues that the historical place of these words and terms is indicative of an evolving vocabulary of Niger Delta and West African historiography, which can be valuable in the study of regional history in this period. With what justification, one may ask.
