Abstract

Development simply means an over-all social process which is dependent upon the outcome of man’s efforts to deal with his natural environment (Anyaogu: 1990). Implicit from this definition is that whatever effort man made to deal with his immediate natural environment to sustain livelihood is development. In Nigeria, there is economistic notion of development and it is very unfortunate because most of the problems we are faced with in the country today have resulted because we have failed to address ourselves to the importance of social development and to improve the quality of life of the people. The role of social work in relation to current national development goals cannot be over-emphasized. Nigeria is at present faced with myraid of social problems. These include poverty, unemployment, delinquency, crime, illiteracy, family instability, drug and alcohol addiction, corruption, and finally child abuse and neglect to mention but a few. The phenomena of urbanisation, economic uncertainties as well as cross-culturalization are producing norm and value conflicts in our society. These in turn result in personal insecurities for many individuals and also increased problems in interpersonal relationship. Social workers are capable of applying professional knowledge and planned skilled intervention to the various problem situations in order to assist those concerned, and thereby help to promote national development in our country. Thus, the main objective of this work is to examine the role of social work in national development.
